Some 300 students were arrested while protesting against changes to visiting privileges at their hostels for security reasons. The students were charged with intimidation, trespassing and holding an illegal gathering.

Die Johannesburgse polisie het skokgranate gebruik om studente uiteen te dryf wat paaie rondom die Universiteit van die Witwatersrand versper het. Die betogers eis dat daar volgende jaar geen verhoging in fooie moet wees nie nadat die minister van Hoër Onderwys en Opleiding, Blade Nzimande, gister aangekondig het dat tersiêre instellings self op verhogings moet besluit solank dit nie meer as ag persent is nie. Een en dertig Wits-studente wat  vanoggend in hegtenis geneem is, is intussen op waarskuwing vrygelaat.

By die Universiteit Kaapstad het studente die toegang tot albei kampusse versper. Klasse is tot oormôre opgeskort.
