Kommentaar op Alaska-aardbewing

Die aardbewing van 7,2 wat eilande aan die kus van Alaska die 24ste getref het, fokus opnuut die aandag op hierdie probleem wat steeds lewens eis – hoewel daar nie noodwendig ‘n vergelyking tussen die sterkte van die aardbewing en die sterftes is nie.
Die USGS se tabel wat aardbewings van 5 of sterker aandui, is veel vollediger as die lys wat sterk aardbewings aandui, maar die data word net vir enkele dae bygehou. Dit is dus moeiliker om tendense vas te stel sonder om ander, onvollediger, tabelle oor langer tydperke te vergelyk.
Die oë van die wêreld was miskien bietjie meer op Chili – Argentinië gevestig waar die uitbarsting van die Puyehue-vulkaan nie net dorpies onder ‘n aslaag laat nie, maar vlugte tot so ver as Suid-Afrika en Australië al ontwrig het.
Die rede hoekom die oë van die wêreld in ‘n aardbewingkonteks op dié uitbarsting gefokus is, is omdat die kwaaiste aardbewing wat nog gemeet is, die Valdividia-aardbewing van 9,5 Chili in 1960 getref het, en dit min of meer met die vorige uitbarsting van die vulkaan ooreengeval het.
Hoewel die huidige uitbarsting talle aardbewings tot gevolg het, registreer min van hulle as sterk genoeg om op tabelle opgeneem te word.
Op die USGC tabel hieronder lyk dit of die meeste aardbewings nou in ‘n strook van Noordoos- Australië na Japan voorkom.
In die tabel heel onder – ook van die USGC maar wat die beduidende aardbewings (ook wat lewensverlies betref al was hulle lig) lyk dit of die jaar 2011 besonder ruim aan aardbewings van 7 en meer weggetrek het. Hierna was dit stiller tot die Honshu-aardbewing – voor- en naskokke, ‘n paar bielies opgelewer het. Die Alaska-aardbewing was die eerste grote in ‘n geruime tyd wat nie regstreeks met die Honshu-verskuiwing in verband staan nie.
‘n Onlangse studie op die San Andreasfout, wat ook op die USGC se webblad aangebring is, toon dat veraf-aardbewings versnelde (hoewel steeds stadig) verskuiwing op ‘n aardkorsfout kan uitoefen. Vroeër vanjaar het ‘n ander studie egter bevind dat daar nie wetenskaplike bewyse is dat groot aardbewings ander groot aardbewings ver daarvandaan beduidend meer kan “losskud” nie.
